What to do on Halloween

what-to-do-on-halloween

Halloween is almost here – do you have any plans yet? Here are some activities to celebrate this spooky holiday with children.

Halloween is an Irish holiday that started around the year 100 AD, when countrymen believed that spirits passed through to our world. As time has gone by, fear has turned into fun, making Halloween one of children’s favourite holidays.

Halloween traditions

Jack-o’-lanterns are a must! Halloween is so popular nowadays that you can find pumpkins in any supermarket at this time of year. Grab a carving knife, and get creative!

It is then time to put on your costume and go trick or treating. This tradition is becoming increasingly popular in big cities in Spain.

In Latin America and Spain, All Saints’ Day is celebrated on 1st November to remember and honour the dead. While it is more of a celebration in South American countries, this holiday is more solemn in Spain.

‘Starstruck’ in the Canary Islands

‘Starstruck’ in the Canary Islands

There are still many perfect spots in the world to look up and marvel at the stars. Here are our suggestions.

The Canary Islands are one of the world’s top tourist destinations for many reasons – the stars being one of them. The isles’ skies are so clear that they are considered a protected space, and have three Starlight Reserve certifications due to their low levels of light pollution.

What is a Starlight Certification?

The Starlight Foundation certifies spaces with excellent sky quality to protect and preserve them. A Starlight Reserve is a protected natural space, accredited in order to promote the preservation of the night sky.

The most recent addition to the Canary Islands’ list was Fuerteventura, in 2015. La Palma and Cumbres de Tenerife were the two first certified locations in the archipelago.

Enjoying the Costa del Sol with children

Have a wonderful holiday with your children with this brief guide on Málaga and Marbella. You will fall in love with the Costa del Sol.

The Costa del Sol has it all: beaches, natural sites and great food. It is the perfect place to travel to with children, as you can combine sightseeing and relaxing on the beach.

What to see in Málaga

Málaga has some notorious monuments, such as the Alcazaba –one of the most important Muslim sites in Spain–, and the castle of Gibralfaro, erected in the 14th century. If walking all around Málaga sounds a bit too tiring, you can use the ´hop on hop off´ buses, which stop at the city’s top sites. These include the harbour, the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation and the cathedral.

After a long day of sightseeing, you can visit the amusement park Tivoli, in Benalmádena, where the little ones can have fun and enjoy the shows!

The most famous attractions in the Costa del Sol are of course its beaches. La Malagueta and Pedregalejo are perfect to spend the day lying under the sun and eating pescaíto frito (fried fish).

Did you know that Lanzarote is a volcanic island?

Did you know that Lanzarote is a volcanic island?

This island of volcanic origin is one of the most beautiful in the world.  Learn more about its volcanoes with Elba Hotels. Just for the brave!

Twenty million years ago, tons of lava erupted from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. This is how the island of Lanzarote was born, with its varied landscapes, incredible colours and craters.

Lanzarote is a volcanic island that –just like the rest of the Canary Islands– was born during this phenomenon. The island’s first inhabitants started spreading across the island in 1402, even though its rebellious volcanoes reactivated in 1730 and 1824, ravaging over ten villages. Nature cannot be tamed!

The most significant volcanic eruption occurred in the 18th century, in Vega de Timanfaya. Rocks, debris, ashes and sand covered the island. The Timanfaya National Park shows the aftermath of this event, with an extension of over 200 km and more than 25 volcanoes, making it a treasure to geologists everywhere.
