What to do for the summer solstice

What to do for the summer solstice

The summer solstice marks the official start of the summer. We’ll tell you all about the best celebrations on Spain’s best beaches.

Firstly, let us explain what exactly the summer solstice is and what it signifies. We all know that it refers to the longest day of the year, which marks the start of summer. But why does this happen? This phenomenon occurs due to the Earth’s orbit, which is why there is always one hemisphere more illuminated than the other. This means that when a hemisphere is illuminated in all its splendour, the summer solstice occurs.

When does the summer solstice begin?

This Thursday, on 21st June 2018, the northern hemisphere will welcome the season preferred by millions of people. The warm summer then begins and we start dreaming of the perfect tan, with our long-awaited holidays and dips in the sea and pool.

In many cultures this astronomical phenomenon is the basis of celebrations and rituals. The summer solstice in Spain began as a pagan festival complete with its rituals, including lighting bonfires. It was known as the night of San Juan. Although this day does not coincide with the solstice, it is celebrated on the night of June 23.

Plans for San Juan

We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the start of summer than to enjoy San Juan in a warm and sunny destination like Cadiz or Fuerteventura.

Why wait to burn your wishes at the San Juan bonfire? Make them come true in Cadiz by sunbathing at the Costa Ballena Beach Club and dancing by the bonfires until the sun comes up, or relaxing with your family on the endless Fuerteventura coast and at the magnificent pools at the island's various Elba Hotels.
