Carnaval de las Palmas de Gran Canaria

There are times of the year when routine takes a back seat to pure joy, and one of them is just around the corner. If you're looking for an experience that combines rhythm, colour, freedom and an enviable climate, your destination has a name. The Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is not just a festival; it is a cultural phenomenon that transforms the city and infuses everyone who visits it with energy.

Considered one of the most famous carnivals in the world, this celebration is one of the city's biggest tourist attractions during the winter season. Forget the cold and heavy coats; here you'll find the warmth of the Canary Islands and a festive atmosphere that can be felt on every corner. Are you ready to discover why the Carnival of Gran Canaria is so special?

When is the Gran Canaria Carnival?

Take note and book your flights! This year, the magic begins very soon. According to the official programme, the starting gun will be fired on Friday 23rd January with the traditional Pregón, kicking off more than a month of celebrations that will last until Sunday 1st March.

This extended calendar turns the capital into a huge open-air stage. It's the perfect time to plan a getaway, as the island offers the ideal balance: days of beach and sun at Las Canteras — one of the best urban beaches in the world — and nights of carnival fantasy that promise to be historic this year.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival 2026: dates, themes and new features

The countdown has begun and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival 2026 is packed with unmissable events. The city is already preparing to welcome thousands of travellers ready to enjoy the island's most international festival.

This year, the agenda is packed with excitement from the very first minute. January kicks off with the Choreography Festival and the Children's Murgas on the weekend of the 24th and 25th, warming up for an unforgettable February. If you are planning your visit for the 2026 Gran Canaria Carnival, we recommend that you pay close attention to the key weeks in February, when the big galas and mogollones (crowds) are concentrated.

Gran Canaria Carnival events you can't miss

With the programme in hand, we have selected the dates you should block in your diary to experience the essence of carnival in Gran Canaria. These are the highlights of the 2026 edition:

  • Las Murgas (Final): The grand final of Las Murgas will be held on Saturday 7th February. It is the critical and satirical soul of the festival, a spectacle of sharp lyrics and humour that stirs up passions.
  • Queen's Gala: The night of Friday 13th February is reserved for beauty and majesty. Get ready to see designs that are true works of art made of sequins and feathers.
  • Carnival Tuesday: The big day par excellence will be Tuesday 17 February. A festive day that includes the Children's Parade and the vibrant Day Carnival to enjoy under the sun.
  • Drag Queen Gala: Possibly the most iconic and transgressive event. The date is Friday 20 February. Heart-stopping platforms, absolute freedom and a show that goes around the world.
  • The Grand Parade: If you want to experience the party in the streets, you can't miss Saturday 28 February. A human tide of masks and floats will parade through the city in the most crowded event.
  • The Burial of the Sardine: All good things must come to an end. On Sunday 1 March, we will bid farewell to Don Carnal with the ‘Widows on the Run’ and the last Day Carnival before the burning of the sardine.

How to enjoy the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival beyond the party

Although the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria takes over everything, your visit is the perfect excuse to explore the island's treasures. There is so much to see in Gran Canaria: from its stunning beaches to natural parks and historic neighbourhoods, the island offers endless activities for all tastes.
