qué ver en Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the most seductive destinations in the Canary Islands. In fact, it offers such a variety of attractions that it has even been described as ‘a miniature continent’. With a myriad of charming villages and landscapes ranging from desert-like golden dunes to lush pine forests, towering cliffs and coastlines lapped by turquoise waters, you can see why it gets described as such.

But what is there to see in Gran Canaria? What are the essential places to visit? Whether you're looking for heavenly beaches or visits to cultural sites, the island has something for everyone. To make it easier for you, at Elba Hotels, we have prepared a list of all the things to see in Gran Canaria.

Discover the highlights of Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is a destination bursting with art, history and incredible natural landscapes, making every visit an unforgettable experience.

Explore the historic neighbourhoods of Vegueta and Triana

If you're wondering what to see in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the historic neighbourhoods of Vegueta and Triana should be two of the must-see places on your agenda.

The neighbourhood of Vegueta is where the old town is located. It was here that Christopher Columbus stayed before leaving for America. As you stroll through its cobbled streets, passing its distinctive colonial buildings, it will transport you back to bygone times.

In addition, the Vegueta Market is the ideal place to immerse yourself in the wonderful flavours and products of the island. You will come across a wide variety of fresh produce such as fish, tropical fruits and local vegetables.

Meanwhile, the neighbourhood of Triana, which is right next door, is a very popular shopping and leisure area. The main shopping street is Mayor de Triana. The architecture of its buildings, which includes wooden balconies and colourful façades, make it one of the most beautiful streets in Spain.

Relax on Playa de Las Canteras

Located in the heart of the city, Playa de Las Canteras is the perfect haven for relaxing after a day of exploring. Its fine golden sand stretches for almost 3 kilometres, making it one of the widest beaches in the whole archipelago.

It is also ideal for enjoying an afternoon of water sports, like surfing or snorkelling, or simply for taking a stroll along the promenade. It is full of bars and restaurants with terraces where you can try some delicious dishes from Canarian cuisine.

Visit the Casa de Colón and the Vegueta Market

Another great place to visit in Gran Canaria is the Casa de Colón. Here you can not only learn about the Genoese navigator, but also about the history of the Canary Islands.

Things to see in the south of Gran Canaria

The south of the island is one of the favourite areas for tourists. It is home to some of the most famous beaches in Gran Canaria which are ideal for both sunbathing and water sports. Do you want to know what to see in the south of Gran Canaria and why this part of the island should be included in your travel plans?

Marvel at the Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes are one of the most surreal and breathtaking sights of Gran Canaria. This vast desert of golden sand stretches over more than 400 hectares and forms part of a protected nature reserve. We recommend a walk through the dunes or even a camel ride, especially at sunset.

Have fun on the beaches of Puerto Rico and Amadores

The most popular beaches in the south of Gran Canaria are Puerto Rico and Amadores.

  • Puerto Rico is known for its lively atmosphere and calm waters, making it perfect for water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking and water skiing. However, it is also a good place for strolling around the marina and enjoying a drink in one of the charming terraces overlooking the sea.
  • Amadores is a paradise with crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect spot to spend the day with your family or with your partner. As it is also protected by a natural bay,  you can swim without worrying about the waves.

Visit Puerto de Mogán, known as 'Little Venice'

Puerto de Mogán is one of the most picture perfect spots in Gran Canaria. It is known as ‘Little Venice’ because of its canals that connect the port with the surrounding areas. Take the opportunity to stroll through its streets full of charming white houses with balconies adorned with bougainvillea and enjoy a quiet evening in one of its seaside restaurants.

If you are looking for attractive accommodation in the area, Hotel Elba is a fantastic choice. It is an excellent starting point for boat trips or even to see dolphins in their natural habitat.

What to see in the north of Gran Canaria

The north of Gran Canaria is quite a contrast to the south of the island. Here, nature as well as small fishing and rural villages take centre stage. If you are looking for a quieter experience, away from the tourist hustle and bustle, the north is the perfect place for you.

Discover the historic centre of Arucas and the church of San Juan Bautista

One of the most emblematic places to see in the north of Gran Canaria is Arucas.  This small municipality is famous for the impressive church of San Juan Bautista, which resembles a Gothic cathedral, and for its rum production, particularly Arehucas rum. You can also enjoy spectacular views of the north coast of Gran Canaria from its vantage point.

Explore the Tamadaba Nature Reserve

The Tamadaba Nature Reserve is one of the most impressive natural spaces on the island. It has more than 7,500 hectares of forests, ravines and cliffs that are a delight for nature lovers. Don't forget to go up to the El Balcón observation deck where you can get a better view of this majestic area.

As you can see, from beautiful beaches and mountains to villages steeped in history, Gran Canaria offers a unique experience for every visitor. Don't think twice - make this marvellous island your next holiday destination!
