Did you know that Thalasso derives from the Greek word “Thalassa”, which means the “Sea”? Hence, Thalassotherapy, refers to the use of sea water for medicinal purposes and healing.
The Romans were great believers in harnessing the properties of sea water for their well-being. A testimony to that might be all the thermal baths they built during their ancient empire - many of which are still in use nowadays.
But, why is sea water so beneficial?
Well, in varying degrees, sea water contains all of the essential minerals found, naturally, in the human body; such as copper, zinc, magnesium, sodium, iodide, potassium and calcium and so on. These are absorbed through the pores of the skin and metabolised for use within the body. For this process to be optimal, any Thalasso pool should be heated to anything between 31 and 34 degrees, which is the body’s own natural temperature.
It is because of this high mineral content that a person’s natural body weight can be reduced to about 10% while in a Thalasso pool. This highly favours rehabilitation because all strain is taken off the joints, which, in turn, considerably reduces any existent pain; making mobility much easier.
We are proud to say that in the Gran Hotel Elba, in Estepona, our spa is a Thalasso Spa, which means that all the water used within the spa complex is sea water; with the exception of the showers in the changing rooms. This means that whether you are using the plunge pool, the Jacuzzi, the whirlpool, our pool with the swan neck jets, the Ducha Vichy, the shower jet, the aroma showers, or our immersion baths, you will be benefitting from all the properties the Mediterranean Sea has to offer.
Come and enjoy our magnificent Thalasso Spa!
