If you’re thinking about going to the theatre, don’t miss out on the Madrid recommendations we’ve prepared for you
Since 1961 theatre has had its own day for us to celebrate its existence— tomorrow, on March 27! Indeed, on this date we celebrate World Theatre Day worldwide, created as an initiative of the International Theatre Institute to commemorate the inauguration of the first Theatre of Nations in Paris in 1956.
Which play to see?
Theatre comes from the Greek term theatron, meaning "place to contemplate", and of course in Madrid there is much to admire as the capital has one of the broadest cultural offerings in terms of performing arts in Europe.
Remember that World Theatre Day is a day emphasising the playful nature of this art, but also as a tool for social criticism. Therefore, when deciding which play to see in Madrid and choosing among the theatre recommendations, you must consider what genre appeals to you most and with whom you should attend.
The plays you shouldn’t miss
Madrid’s offer is varied— musicals, cabarets, improv... The decision is yours, but we’ll give you some great suggestions.
If you are looking for a family weekend, the best option is a musical. On Gran Vía you’ll find “The Bodyguard” and “The Lion King”, and “Billy Elliot” at the Teatro Alcalá. These options are ideal if you are staying at any hotel in Madrid.
If you are looking for a good comedy, “The Test”, also on the Calle Alcalá, or “Men are from Mars and Women from Venus” are good choices. Also, the Teatro Lara is showing a musical comedy “La Llamada” (The Call) and the hilarious "Burundanga” (A Mess).
For more traditional options, in Madrid you can also see such classics as "Cyrano de Bergerac" and “Les Miserables", while magic-lovers should check out the show "Nada es Imposible” (Nothing is Impossible) by Mago Pop, for sure the winning option.
