Carnavales de Cádiz 2026

They say that Cadiz has three seasons: summer, winter and Carnival. And they're right. If there's one festival in Spain that exudes ingenuity, social criticism and freedom in every way, it's the one held in the ‘Tacita de Plata’ (Silver Cup). But this year, we don't want you to hear about it second-hand. This year, the Cadiz Carnival 2026 promises to be legendary, and you have to be there to feel the goosebumps as the first pasodoble hits the streets.

Forget what you know about other carnivals. Here it's not just about feathers and sequins (although there are those too), but about the words, the irony and the ‘art’ of an entire town that takes to the streets to sing about its joys and sorrows. If you're looking for a getaway that will heal your soul with laughter, read on. We've put together the ultimate guide so you don't miss a thing.

The Cádiz Carnival, a unique experience to be had once in a lifetime

Visiting Cádiz in February is like stepping into a parallel universe. The city is transformed. The corners of the Barrio de la Viña neighbourhood become improvised stages and the air smells of the sea and confetti. It is a democratic, street-based and open festival, where the spectator is part of the show.

What makes the Cádiz Carnival unique is that perfect blend of the official and the spontaneous. You can get excited about the big comparsas in the theatre, but you can also cry with laughter at an ‘illegal’ (street groups that don't compete) in any small square while sipping a glass of manzanilla. It is this atmosphere of camaraderie and the spark of Cadiz that hooks everyone who visits for the first time.

When is the Cadiz Carnival 2026: key dates

We know that organising your schedule can be a hassle with so many events, so let's get to the important stuff: when is the Cadiz Carnival in 2026. Although the atmosphere has been heating up since January, the big week, the one you have to mark in red on your calendar, has its own milestones.

The official date of the 2026 Cadiz Carnival for the street party kicks off in mid-February. The first weekend is undoubtedly the most exciting time. This is when the city receives the largest influx of visitors, eager to experience Saturday night and the majestic Domingo de Coros (Sunday of Choirs). If you stay a little longer, you'll discover that Monday (a local holiday) is a magical day, with a more intimate atmosphere where you can hear the best coplas (traditional songs). And watch out, because during the second weekend, the party picks up again to bid farewell to Don Carnal as he deserves.

Complete calendar of the 2026 Cadiz Carnival: events, competitions and activities

So you don't miss a thing, here's a breakdown of what's in store. Keep in mind that although the official festivities begin in February, the gastronomic ‘pre-carnival’ has already kicked off.

Gastronomic Events (The tasty prelude). These events are free and perfect for whetting your appetite (literally).

  • Pestiñada Popular: Held on 10 January in Plaza Fragela. If you missed it, don't worry, there's still plenty to come!
  • Ostionada Popular: Held on Sunday 25 January. At 1:30 p.m. in Plaza de San Antonio, you can taste fresh oysters while listening to the first songs.
  • Erizada y Mejillonada: On Sunday, 1 February, we have a double date at 1:30 p.m. Erizada in the legendary Calle de La Palma (La Viña neighbourhood) and Mejillonada at the La Perla club.
  • Gambada and Chicharronada: Just before the big week, on 8 February, you can enjoy the Gambada at the La Perla club and the new Chicharronada Popular, which is celebrating its first edition in the Plaza de la Catedral.

The Big Week and the COAC:

The Official Carnival Group Competition (COAC 2026) is the heart of the festival. For weeks, chirigotas, comparsas, choirs and quartets battle it out in a duel of lyrics at the Gran Teatro Falla. But the highlights are:

  • COAC 2026 Grand Final: Friday 13 February. It is the longest and most exciting night of the year at the theatre.
  • Carnival Proclamation: Saturday 14 February in the Plaza de San Antonio. This year, the honour falls to the great Manu Sánchez, who is sure to give us a proclamation full of humour and sensitivity.
  • Grand Carnival Parade: Sunday, 15 February. Colour, floats and overflowing joy parading down the main avenue.

Also, don't miss the 2026 Cadiz Carnival poster, a work of art that illustrates the essence of this festival every year and which you will see decorating every corner of the city.

How to enjoy the 2026 Cadiz Carnival beyond the crowds

Sometimes the hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. If you want to experience a more authentic and leisurely carnival, our advice is to stay away from the main streets at peak times. Look for the street performers in the most secluded squares of the Pópulo or La Viña neighbourhoods. There, without microphones or stages, is where the true soul of Cádiz resides.

You can also take advantage of the quieter mornings for some cultural sightseeing. The oldest city in the West has a lot to offer: Phoenician and Roman sites that, during carnival, coexist with the festivities.

Tips for experiencing the Cádiz carnival without sacrificing comfort

Let's be realistic: finding accommodation in Cádiz city during carnival can be an impossible (and very expensive) task if you don't book months in advance. What's more, the noise from the festivities lasts until dawn, making it difficult to get a good night's sleep.

The smart strategy for enjoying the Cadiz carnival in 2026 is to stay nearby, but not in the thick of things. That way, you can enjoy the festivities to the full and retreat to an oasis of peace when your body says enough is enough.

Just a few kilometres away, connected by catamaran or a short drive, is our luxury and wellness proposal: the Elba Costa Ballena Beach & Thalasso Resort. Imagine spending the day laughing with the chirigotas in Cadiz and ending the day with a thalassotherapy circuit or relaxing in a spacious, quiet room facing the sea. It's the perfect combination: the madness of carnival by day and total relaxation by night.

Don't just take our word for it. Get your costume ready (or ‘tipo’, as they say here), practise your laughter and come and enjoy an experience you'll always remember. Cadiz awaits you!
