Vecindario, arts and crafts and good cuisine

24 / 06 / 2014 - Elba news

Vecindario is one of our favourite locations, particularly because one of our hotels is placed here. It belongs to the Santa Lucia de Tirajana municipality and it is very close to the Gran Canary airport.

Today we are going to discover the area, the places we shouldn’t miss and the local cuisine and culture.

The Ansite Fortress is a must visit, a volcanic building of archaeological interest where you can find numerous aboriginal caves where endless archaeological remains have been found.

We continue with the Castle Museum of the Fortress, located in the old town of Santa Lucia, another must visit in our trip. In this archaeological museum we will be able to appreciate the remains found in the area. As well as to observe ethnographical, botanical and zoological elements or visit the garden in the same museum where we will find samples of the local fauna and fruit trees from different latitudes.

On Wednesdays the market in the centre of Vecindario is well worth a visit and if we have time on Sundays you can visit the market in the old town of Santa Lucía to do a bit of shopping.

For a bit of cultural shopping and learn about the local arts and crafts visit the Craft Centre in Parque de la Era. With objects from the local pottery, characterized by the aboriginal traditional techniques such as clay, ravine sands, red ochre dye, and also the elaboration of baskets with vegetable fibres. Both types of crafts can be bought in the shop within the Craft Centre.

To cool down we recommend Pozo Izquierdo if you would like to go to the beach. It is one of the best locations to practice windsurfing due to its strong gusts of wind and it is also the home of the Wold Championship of Windsurfing. On the same beach you will find swimming pools and specialized shops for this activity.

After all those visits and exercise you will feel like recharging your strength and try one of the delicious traditional dishes such as the famous olives, the well-known ‘papas arrugadas’, the Canarian stew, ‘sancocho’ or marinated rabbit… All of these accompanied by a good white or red wine elaborated in the local wineries.
