Escape to Motril

14 / 08 / 2014 - Elba news

Motril is nestled on the south of the province of Granada, between the mountainous border of Sierra Lujar and the Mediterranean Sea. It is located between Malaga and Almeria and is the only port of exit to the sea within the whole province.

It is the ideal place to escape in summer: the summer months are hot and with the bustle and hustle comes the life and joy to Motril since hordes of people come to swim in its numerous beaches.

Its main tourist attraction is the combination of its patrimony and its excellent beaches. Among its interesting art and historic sights, the highlight is the oldest building known to this region: the church Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación, erected in 1502 by the Cardinal Mendoza. The Town Hall, which occupies a building constructed in 1963, is located besides the church. After crossing Puerta de Granada Street, an old access to the city walls, and wandering the Ramblas del Manjón, we arrive to the old Moorish quarter. Streets with long tradition that is still full of palaces from the 17th century and buildings with Moorish architecture. Other architectonic sites are the Castle of Carchuna, Palma House that hosts the Museum of Pre-Industrial Sugar Cane, the Chapel of San Antonio, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, the saint patron of Motril, and the Calderon Theatre.

The municipality has also an 18-hole golf course called Los Moriscos located in Granada Beach and a marina. The commercial port of Motril is in full expansion and it welcomes more and more tourist cruise liners that dock here and allow their passengers to go on routes and excursions around the province of Granada.

Being the main fishing port in Granada, this city is in charge of distributing excellent fresh fish to all the kitchens around the province. Come and try the shrimps, white prawns and langoustines, delicious either boiled or slightly grilled and the baked or salt cooked sea bream, sea bass, red snapper, porgy bream and other rockfish. Two of the specialties, served by most of the bars and restaurants in Motril, are the dry octopus and the sardine “moranga”.

The dessert could not be other than the ‘torta real’. It is the most representative pudding in Motril’s cuisine and it can be sampled with a dash of rum crafted by Francisco Montero liquor manufacturer.

Delicious food, historical and artistic sights, exceptional landscapes… Can you think of a better plan?
