The best museums in Cádiz

Visiting Cádiz soon? Here are the top spots and museums that you cannot miss.

Some of Spain’s most historically relevant events have taken place in Cádiz, due to its strategic position between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the city from which Christopher Columbus set sail, and where the Spanish constitution of 1812 was born. If you are staying in our hotel in Cádiz, do not forget to explore as much as possible – Cádiz has got so much to offer!

Places of interest in Cádiz

A stroll through this city can feel like a trip to Cuba. Cádiz and Havana, apart from being twinned cities, share many features such as their narrow streets, Spanish colonial architecture, broad seafront esplanades, and their liveliness.

The magnificent, yellow-domed Cathedral of Cádiz stands in the old town. Behind the cathedral, the wall La Puerta de Tierra serves as one of the main entrances to it.

El Barrio del Pópulo is the oldest quarter, where you can find sites of historical importance such as the Roman Theatre and the beautiful square of San Juan de Dios. Do not forget to visit the impressive stately homes in Santa María, and the nearby chapel of La Santa Cueva, where you can see some of Francisco de Goya’s paintings.

What to do in Cádiz

One of the things you absolutely cannot miss in Cádiz is the tapas in Plaza de la Mina square. However, the most efficient way to learn about the city and its history is by exploring its museums. The Museum of Cádiz is an Archaeology and Fine Arts museum with works by renowned artists such as Murillo and Rubens.

The Museo Catedralicio and Museo de las Cortes go hand in hand, as they represent two of the most significant historical events in the country – the abolition of the Spanish Inquisition and the birth of the Spanish Constitution of 1812.

As a treat for the little ones, you can also visit the Puppet Museum, a workshop where children get to create their own puppet, see plays, and explore.
